What Does It Mean When Daylight Saving Time Ends?

Get ready to “fall back” this weekend. We'll gain an hour of sleep when the clocks are turned back. Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 6. For most of us, the extra hour comes and goes because we are in bed at 2 a.m., sleeping, and other than noticing more sunlight in the morning and perhaps feeling a little more refreshed, we hardly even notice it. Smart clocks, now, know when to change on their own but some have to do it manually with their traditional clocks Saturday evening before bed.

Now let's talk more about Daylight Saving Time and how it affects everyone in Northern America.

What Is Daylight Saving Time?

Daylight Saving Time (DST) is the practice of moving the clocks forward one hour from Standard Time during the summer months and changing them back again in the fall. The general idea is that this allows us all to make better use of natural daylight: moving the clocks forward one hour in the spring grants us more daylight during summer evenings while moving clocks back one hour in the fall grants us more daylight during winter mornings.

Is it Daylight “Saving” or “Savings” Time?

The correct term is “Daylight Saving Time“ and not “Daylight Savings Time”, though many of us are guilty of saying it the wrong way. The technical explanation is that the word “saving” is singular because it acts as part of an adjective rather than a verb.

What is the Purpose of Daylight Saving Time?

The Department of Transportation said daylight saving time saves energy, prevents traffic injuries, and reduces crime. The DOT oversees time zones and the uniform observance of daylight saving time because the railroad industry first instituted time standards.

Will Daylight Saving Time be Permanent?

Last year, the U.S. Senate unanimously approved a bill called the "Sunshine Protection Act" that would make daylight saving time permanent starting in 2023. The measure has not yet passed in the U.S. House of Representatives, nor has it been signed into law by President Joe Biden.

If the bill will not be signed by that time, here are the details for Daylight Saving Time Dates in the next three years. Please note that in the U.S., exceptions to DST are Arizona (except for the Navajo Nation), Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, and American Samoa.

When does Daylight Saving Time begin in 2023?

In 2023, as it is shown in the table above, daylight saving time will begin at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 12, and will end for the year at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 5.

Whether it be changing our clocks forward or falling back, let's always make use of our time efficiently and enjoy each day.
